salon sundays at the disco
Hello fellow artists, writers, poets, performers and filmmakers!
Would you like to meet me at 420 Tyler Street in Monterey (directly on the back side of The Golden State Theatre) one Sunday a month?
Would you like to meet me at 420 Tyler Street in Monterey (directly on the back side of The Golden State Theatre) one Sunday a month?
Now that my partner, Kenny, has gotten into a groove with Compact Disco, I feel I can dip my feet into the space in my own way a bit. When I told him I'd like to do an art-thing, he suggested I host a monthly event and I said, "heck yes!"
I'm calling it Salon Sundays at the Disco and it's a private event held on a Sunday, once a month, before the venue opens. It's not an open mic.
My reason for organizing/hosting this is not only that I have access to a public space with a big wall for projections, but I would like to help create time, room and a place for those of us who are actively creating and wish to share with a supportive audience of others who are not emerging artists/writers and live with art in a way that is more than a hobby or an occasional act of self-care. As well, I want to learn more about what y'all are working on and why!
You can read something you've written, present a project in progress, show clips of a film or perform a piece... you get the picture.
Salon Sundays are invite-only and is not an advertised event. I want this to be about art-unapologetically and without having to "translate '' what we are doing to make people outside of our world feel comfortable.
I don't mean for our Sundays to be terribly formal but I would like to act as host and schedule presenters. I'm hoping maybe three per Sunday, depending on how much time those who are presenting works need. Also, attendance does not require a presentation. It's cool to just support and learn about our fellow artists' projects and works. I also hope to host guest artist presentations when people are in town. I have so many wonderful art-buds that I'd love to have come to visit and share.
I will have tall tables and stools out, facing the wall where the projector "projects," so there is an opportunity for presentations. As well, short films can be shown via Youtube. Of course presenting without any sort of technology is totally welcomed and encouraged.
It's a small enough space so I do not think a microphone will be needed (we've been fine without it), but if certain technologies are needed and can be brought in and taken out by 5pm, we will sort things out.
It's free entry for our event and there will be free drinks and snacks for those of us involved. Some attendees have been asking to contribute to our snack foods and I think that's a good idea, going forward.
Please know I'm not trying to exclude anyone who has solid work to share and would appreciate being a part of this kind of thing. Please let me know if I should invite someone I haven't yet added to our list.
Other details: It's a twenty-one and over only venue whether it's open or not. Staff and the DJs will begin entering the space at 4:30 pm and setting up. We could adjust our start time to 2pm to avoid the interruptions but so far, everyone seems to be happy beginning at 3pm and the interruptions are subtle. Everyone is welcome to stay beyond 5pm, when the bar is open to the public, to enjoy the music, dancing and libations!
If you are so inclined, please feel free to respond to just me at [email protected] whether you are interested in attending or presenting at the next event, so I can arrange presentation times and sort out needs for the artist/writer. Also! Here is a sharable links page to add your info to, if you wish and as well, you can check out the works of those from the gang who chose to upload links and such: ARTIST / WRITER LINKS
I think you are super-cool!
Warmest regards,
Linda Lay
